I live in beautiful East Tennessee, home of the Great Smoky Mountains and the gorgeous Cumberland Plateau, and with many spectacular rivers and lakes. My hobbies include hiking, backpacking, paddling, and photography. In addition to the photos posted here, I maintain a photo-journal of my recent outings at: http://picasaweb.google.com/ronshrieves.

2012 - John Muir Wilderness : In late August, four friends and I left for a 9-day trek on the John Muir Trail (JMT) in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. The plan was to enter the John Muir Wilderness via the South Lake (Bishop Pass) trail, hike south on the JMT to it's intersection with the Kearsarge Pass trail, and exit the Wilderness via the Kearsarge Pass trail. After arriving in L.A., driving to Bishop, CA, and spending two nights at a fishing camp with 8,500 feet elevation, we embarked on the trek. Unfortunately it became clear during the first day's hike that I had contracted a stomach virus, and after a sleepless (and foodless) evening and night, I decided to return to Bishop until I was sure the virus had run its course, then I would meet up with the group by doing the reverse of the planned hike, i.e., I would enter the Wilderness at Kearsarge Pass, then hike north on the JMT. When I met up with my group, I would do an about face and finish the hike with them. It turns out that my recovery time was about two days, and on the second day I was well enough to drive over to Yosemite Nat'l Park and spend the day wandering around there (I had never been before). So some of the photos in this album are from Yosemite and a couple are from the Owens Valley. The following day I was able to start on the Kearsarge Pass trail, and after three days and nights on on the "reverse route" I finally met up with my friends, and hiked with them for the remaining two nights and three days. The picture below are presented in chronological order of my adventure.
